Local Update   New Support for Seniors
This year, the Ontario Seniors Property Tax Grant began providing up to $250 of relief per household to eligible senior’s who own their own home. Next year, the grant grows to $500 for 2010, and every year thereafter. Helping a generation of people stay in the homes where they raised their families, built businesses and life-long friendships the senior’s property tax grant is as much an investment in our seniors as it is in our communities.

New Advanced Health-Care in Vaughan - Now and in the future.
In early 2006, the Ministry of Health selected Vaughan as one of the first of 22 new Community Health Centers (CHC) in Ontario. The Vaughan CHC is co-located with a variety of health services providers in the new Vaughan Campus of Care. These include doctors, diabetes support, dieticians, social workers and nurse practitioners. Additionally a Satellite Dialysis Unit of York Central Hospital, funded by the Province of Ontario, will provide 33 renal-dialysis stations and a nephrology out-patient clinic at the site.

Located at 9401 Jane St., the Vaughan Campus of Care brings multiple health care options together under one roof. It provides important services now, and fills an interim need while we complete the planning work for a Vaughan Hospital.

That work is well underway, beginning with a Business Plan Grant in April 2007. In September 2008, the Ministry of Health approved Vaughan’s business case and entered into the next step of hospital planning in co-operation with the Vaughan Health Care Foundation and the Central LHIN (Local Health Integration Network).

Historic Environmental Protection
At 1.8 Million acres Ontario’s Greenbelt protects a tract of land the size of P.E.I. It includes waterways, environmental features, agricultural lands, and protected countryside. Functioning like a green lung around the increasingly populated GTA, the Greenbelt includes Vaughan’s Boyd Park and the Kortright Conservation Area, which will provide for generations of clean air, recreational and natural spaces.

The Next Generation of Transit
Vaughan is at the centre of a renaissance in GTA transit. The Ontario government approved the construction of the Spadina Subway extension to York University and the Vaughan Corporate Centre at Highway Seven and Jane Street. Together with the federal government, York Region, and the City of Toronto, we’ve invested over $2 billion in the subway scheduled for completion in 2015. When complete, it will connect with York Region’s VIVA Rapid Transit Line, linking all of York Region and Toronto with a fast efficient system capable of offloading millions of vehicle trips per year from our roads.

New Schools in Vaughan - Smaller Class Sizes Throughout
In 2004, The Ontario government announced smaller class sizes for students in Kindergarten to Grade 3. In York Region, and throughout the province, over 90% of our schools have achieved class sizes of 20 or less in those grades. In the last year, in Vaughan, new funding for additional schools will see the completion of new state-of-the-art schools at Weston Road and Major Mackenzie as well as Keele Street and Major Mackenzie.
